During his tenure at Loyola he received numerous awards and grants, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, Adelaide Benjamin Distinguished Professorship, and Fulbright Fellowship Grant. Grote has participated in several artist residencies, such as those at Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe Art Institute, and Albania University Tirana. His work is in several museums and collections, among them Hilliard Museum of Art Lafayette, LA; Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, AL; Pan American Life Insurance Company, New Orleans; and University of Texas, Tyler, TX. Grote presently works in his home and studio in Covington, LA.
Grote finds inspiration in his geographic surroundings, bringing him around the world to be in new environments, using found objects from the space he occupies. “What I have found most stimulating is to place myself in another location and allow that environment to influence me,” says Grote, “I attempt to express this freshness and excitement in the art that is produced at that location.”
