Kjelshus Collins is a New Orleans artist born in Oklahoma City. Kjelshus is a prolific printmaker, ceramicist, and artisinal toy maker. He also moonlights as an art teacher and art handler. In fall of 2022 Kjelshus was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and was in paralysis for a number of months. This particular piece is an ode to the medical professionals and colleagues that helped him through his recovery. New Orleans artists James Flynn and Cheryl Hayes procured the materials for Kjelshus to create this work. The pills are made of polymer clays Prof. Hayes brought to the hospital for Kjelshus to strengthen his hands and continue to make art. Medici, means medical doctor in Italian, and also the name of known benefactors of art from antiquity. Kjelshus recieved his BFA and BA from Oklahoma State University and his MFA from the University of New Orleans.
